Together with Sonas Equestrian,

Key Therapy Counseling now offers:

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy

What is involved?

Clients participating in EAP will meet at the barn in Sandy Hook,. They will work with the horse that has been selected for them in conjunction with their therapist to explore aspects of self development and healing for a 60minute session. All work is done on the ground, so there is no riding involved, and is supervised by a horse "handler" who is an expert in reading and managing the horse. This is necessary for the well-being of the horse, and will allow the therapist to focus on you, the client, and your therapeutic process.

What are the costs?

These horses are gentle, empathetic, curious, and well cared for. While your therapy session can be billed through insurance, the care of the horses, the maintenance of the grounds, the monthly expense of housing and feeding each horse, utilities, health and wellness check-ups, and the cost of the handler are all expenses not covered by your insurance. The cost to you is your co-pay or co-insurance, plus a $90 per session barn fee to help cover these expenses. We also offer a discount card for multiple sessions purchased in advance, and reduced session rates for groups of 3 or more.

How does it work?

While you can schedule weekly EAP sessions and achieve your therapy goals through this modality, you can also choose to schedule an EAP session or two (or more) to accompany traditional therapy. Sonas has both indoor and outdoor corrals so sessions can be held in all weather. No horse experience is necessary to benefit from the work you will do with these majestic animals.

Stella

Stella Cinderella or Stella for short is one of the newest members of the Sonas family. She is quiet, gentle and kind and by far the quickest learner I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Aspen

Aspen, or Canela Rose, is a former racehorse, who has adapted to life at Sonas Equestrian very well. She is very sweet, loves to cuddle, and always aims to please. Her favorite snacks are cheese balls and pizza and you will often find her looking for her hay in her pen or napping in the sun
