What is Reiki?
Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century through the teachings of Mikao Usui. The practice is based on the traditional concept of a universal life-force energy and is intended to encourage balance, relaxation, and the body's natural capacity for restoration. Today, Reiki is used as a complementary wellness practice, including in some healthcare settings.
In Reiki and other Eastern healing traditions, Chi (or Qi) refers to the vital life-force energy believed to flow through and around us. Stress, emotional experiences, and the demands of everyday life can sometimes leave us feeling energetically depleted, stagnant, or out of balance. Reiki is based on the belief that supporting the natural flow of this energy can help restore a greater sense of harmony and well-being.
What happens during a Reiki Session?
During a Reiki session, you remain fully clothed while resting comfortably. The practitioner uses a series of gentle hand positions, either lightly placing their hands on the body or holding their hands just above it. There is no massage, manipulation, or pressure. Hands-off Reiki is always an option for clients who prefer not to be touched, making the experience adaptable to individual comfort and personal boundaries.
What does Reiki feel Like?
Every person's experience with Reiki is different. Some people report sensations of warmth, tingling, gentle pulsing, heaviness or lightness, while others simply experience a profound sense of quiet and relaxation. Some become sleepy or fall asleep, while others notice emotions or thoughts arising during the experience. In a large study examining people's subjective experiences during Reiki sessions, the most commonly reported experience was deep relaxation and calm, followed by physical sensations, emotional experiences, changes in perception, and sleepiness.
Who would benefit from Reiki?
For mental health clients, Reiki can offer something particularly valuable: time to slow down and simply receive. Rather than requiring you to talk, analyze, problem-solve, or find the right words, a Reiki session provides a quiet space to rest, reconnect with yourself, and cultivate a sense of grounding and balance.
Come as you are. Rest. Reconnect. Restore.
Note:
Reiki is best viewed as a complement to mental health treatment rather than a replacement for psychotherapy or medical care. Although many people describe Reiki as calming or restorative, research has not established the proposed energy mechanism or clearly demonstrated that Reiki treats specific health or mental health conditions.
